Commissioned by NBC as the first opera written for television\, Amahl and the Night Visitors debuted on December 24\, 1951 becoming the first network television Christmas special to become an annual tradition. Composer Gian Carlo Menotti drew inspiration for the opera from Hieronymus Bosch’s The Adoration of the Magi\, which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, and from his childhood in Italy where gifts were brought at Christmas by the Three Kings instead of Santa Claus.\n\nFeaturing Repertory Opera’s outstanding principal vocalists in collaboration with the Southland Symphony Orchestra\, this live\, in-person performance will showcase some of the finest singers in Southern California. Their great vocal skill and dramatic ability and deeply immerse the audience in the action of the story.\n\n“We are thrilled with this production of Amahl and are so very proud of our outstanding principal singers\, chorus\, and orchestra”\, says Dr. Sylvia Lee Mann\, who is the Music Director & Conductor of the Southland Symphony\, and the Pastor of Bethel Congregational Church. Let’s get together on Friday\, December 30th to play bassoon quartets\, chamber music\, and drink delicious libations at a chill and welcoming brewery. Join and ditch whenever you desire that evening starting at 6:00pm and going all evening. \nThere’s so many wonderful bassoonists and musicians I’ve played with this year and in years past that should meet and relax together finally! \nBring your bassoons and contras\, bass clef music (bassoon ensembles\, quartets\, sextets\, duets\, etc that we’ll grab from and try out throughout the evening)\, music stands\, music viewing tablets\, etc. There will be delicious beers on tap\, a food vendor on site – La Fiesta Mexican Cuisine (we’re told they have vegetarian options!)\, amazing beers\, non-alcoholic drink options\, snacks\, and NERDY BASSOONISTS. \nThe brewery is also dog friendly (if they can handle a gaggle of bassoons playing) and LGBTQ+ welcoming!! Have I mentioned the beer is AMAZING so I’ll be drinking pints in between music playing fun. 🙂
